Some destinations are so magical, extra time on the open road is totally worth it – in fact, it’s part of the journey. This loved-up month, make time to visit some little-known destinations around SA. As lovers of adventure and romance, Vespa has put its two-wheeled stamp of approval on these road-mantic spots to share with your partner – they’re a little out of the way, but worth the ride:

Kaapsehoop

Romance factor: 4/5

Wallet damage: 2/5

This undiscovered hamlet built during the gold rush of the 1800s is surrounded by lush forests, with a cooler climate than most of its Mpumulanga counterparts. It’s right on the edge of the Highveld escarpment, so it has amazing views of the De Kaap Valley below. Wild horses and Blue Swallows abound in this little-known spot, and its many quaint guesthouses and backpackers make it a stunning retreat to rekindle romance.

Nature’s Valley

Romance factor: 2/5

Wallet damage: 2/5

Encircled by the Tsitsikamma Forest, the breath-taking beaches of Nature’s Valley are the perfect setting for an amorous getaway. The sleepy lagoon and untouched forests are magical in their own, quiet, peaceful way – and you can experience the best of the Garden Route by taking a leisurely road trip to get there.

Prince Albert

Romance factor: 4/5

Wallet damage: 3/5

This culinary heart of the Karoo sits at the foot of the Swartberg mountains and has become a mecca for gastronomy-loving locals and tourists. Its wide streets are flanked with aqueducts, distinctive Cape Dutch architecture – and a few romantic hideaways. You’ll drink local wine, snack on plump olives and figs grown in the area, and taste-test local artisanal cheese (in other words, it’s heaven). This is the ultimate Karoo getaway – and the perfect spot for a little two-wheeled cruising.

Cintsa

Romance factor: 3/5

Wallet damage: 4/5

If you’re looking for a low-cost, low-maintenance, sand-between-your-toes adventure for two, Cintsa might just be the enclave you’ve been looking for. With some of the most pristine beaches on the Wild Coast, it’s hard to believe it’s only 40kms from East London. Take a Transkei road trip on two wheels to get there – then chill out when you do.

Cape Vidal

Romance factor: 3/5

Wallet damage: 1/5

Balmy KZN is heaven in February – out of tourist season – when it’s slightly cooler. Make Cape Vidal your resting place after exploring the tropical surrounds of KZN. You’ll stay in secluded log cabins set amongst the dunes, snorkel in crystal clear waters and just generally unwind with your better half.
