Songs of Seduction #2 – Nakhane Touré

Prince’s discography is split into three parts: Sex, Religion and Protest. The most ubiquitous though, is the sex. It still boggles the minds of many as to how a short, gender-bending, cross-dressing man could be the desire of so many women. Dirty Mind is the go to album for his most licentious material. The track ‘Darling Nikki’ from his masterpiece Purple Rain is basically to blame for the gaudy Parental Advisory stickers you see on the front of all ‘naughty’ albums. But here, on this particular song, the evasion of what exactly he is talking about (until the end of the track where he whispers “F*ckin’ on your mind”) is what’s most appealing and seductive. His vocals are at his most strained and desperate. He wants to do it all the time and every day, all right. The programmed snare drum pounds furiously. He‘s not promising love-making here, just unabashed maniac sex. He finally whispers “Come on” as a gong reverberates and he shuts up and the repetition of the act just keeps the song going.
