Watch what you wear
It’s all good and well to celebrate that new promotion with a brand new gold Hublot U-boat watch but, if you’re wearing it to the gym or to a braai then don’t even bother. A watch, much like certain shoes, can be worn in certain settings; you wouldn’t take your new Air Jordans to the office of your accounting firm now would you? Here are some tips on how to recognise the right time for the right watch:

Formal
When entering a formal event like a cocktail party, you want people to take you seriously, so that novelty Spongebob watch you got from your niece on holiday is not going to cut it. At more formal events you need to choose more simple elegant pieces, preferably with a black leather band with a clean and clear face. For example this Zenith Port Royal watch would be ideal.
(however if you are wearing a tuxedo or suit that’s non-black then a brown or rose gold watch would acceptable).

Casual
Take the same approach to your watches in a casual setting as you do to your clothes. Relaxed, lightweight and durable are the words you’re looking for when choosing a casual watch. Here you can have fun and take out your nieces Spongebob watch (not really). Material instead of the regular metal or leather straps are a good indication that it’s a decent casual watch. (No one likes the guy who wears the fifty thousand rand watch around his broke friends). The NATO strap is the most obvious choice for a light and easy time piece

Sport
For the odd jog and gym session it’s a no surprise that durable and sturdy watches are the way to go. A rubber strap with a light face would be ideal but even the casual watches can substitute here (watch out for sweat on the material). Function is the purpose of sports watches so things like GPS, heart rate monitors and so forth are sometimes necessary add-ons for the savvier outdoorsman. This is where you can play with colour and design; as sports and fashion have evolved and merged, so have the watches in this range. The Suunto Ambit is a perfect sports watch.

Office
This is your time to shine (literally and figuratively) the office watch is the perfect time to show power and dominance in your time piece. Brown leather straps, flashes of gold and the odd diamond or two are encouraged to truly and deservedly flaunt your achievements in your field of work. However style is key here, simplicity and elegance should come easy to men in this position so nothing too ostentatious or gaudy. You can never go wrong with Hublot here and the classic fusion Aerofusion aka King Gold is the epitome of office time watch wear.
