Bad news is constantly being circulated on social media and mainstream media, and it’s tempting to become disillusioned and lose hope in humanity. Since we’re bombarded with news about what is going wrong in the world, we often tend to forget that while life can be treacherous, there is so much beauty that is happening alongside the tragedy. If we are to remain sane, it is important to take time to think about what is there to celebrate. This is not to say that we must be ignorant, no; the point is to have a balanced view of life so that we don’t fall into a collective depression.  The problem isn’t that there isn’t any good news; the problem is that good news is scantly broadcasted and shared. Since finding good news can seem like a hard endeavour, we have listed a few platforms that are dedicated to disseminating positive vibes only.

Good News Network

Founded by Geri Weis-Corbley, the Good News Network is a US-based company that has dedicated itself to collecting and sharing positive news from around the world. It was established in 1995 “as an antidote to the barrage of negativity” that was frequently spread by mainstream media. Since the site’s inception, Geri, who is also editor-in-chief, has been recognised as the first expert in the field of positive news. Today, GNN receives millions of site visits every month.

GoodThingsGuy

GoodThingsGuy is an award-winning South African blog that was founded by Brent Lindeque. The platform has been doing a stellar job in sharing good news from South Africa. This year, GoodThingsGuy won the award for the Best Lifestyle Blog and took the top spot as South Africa’s Blog of the Year for the second year in a row! Brent’s mission has always been to bring positivity to the national conversation and balance the news South Africans receive. For the good work he does, Brent has been recognised as one of the Mail and Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans and as a Primedia LeadSA Hero.

“I am so incredibly humbled and thankful for both the awards and to be named South Africa’s Blog of the Year again is just mind-blowing. The platform has become one of the leading good news sites in South Africa & has grown from a simple idea to share a few good stories on Facebook to a full team that bring good news to South Africans every day. I have to give a massive shout out to all our readers who regularly tune in and catch up with the good things. You make us what we are today and this award is actually yours for all the support you give us.”

GoodThingsGuy was also placed on the global list of the most interesting websites! The platform is only 3 years old and is on a mission to change what the world pays attention to. The team behind GoodThingsGuy believe that there is good news all around us and over 1 million readers a month agree with them.

The Good News

The Good News is another South African platform that has set out to curate and disseminate positive news. Instead of focusing solely on the challenges we face as a country, The Good News also strives to find solutions and celebrate the good that we have going on in SA.  “We are an independent organisation, apolitical and with no agenda other than to source and publish good news about our beloved country. We like to stimulate dialogue and debate. We like to offer a fresh perspective. We are well aware of the challenges that we face and the extent of these challenges. We address these challenges full on, but we choose to concentrate on the solution, rather than the problem.”

Not only does this site have great articles that take you on a tour of the bright side of life and encourage you to lead a positive and healthy life, but it also has great videos that will make you smile and give your heart and mind a break from the grim parts of reality.
