Freshlyground fights the fire.

Music might just be what the city of Cape Town needs to face up to all that was lost in the recent wild fires there. The blazes gutted many properties and homes in its wake. Lives were also lost.  Freshlyground, the chart topping band based in the city is taking to the road to garner support for the affected community, especially in Noordhoek Farm Village.

The irony of a band made famous, in part by a song about When The Fire Is Low, lending a help to fire relief should not be lost here. The song was the first single off their 2010 album, Radio Africa. The SA Music Award winning groupkick started their tour of the country at the Cape Farmhouse for a Fire-Aid gig to give the fire ravaged community a much need chance to dance, celebrate their community spirit and re-connect under more festive circumstances.

The gig will now be followed by series of performances at that will include KZN and Gauteng. FreshlyGround are using the gigs to celebrate the selfless courage and dedication shown by the firefighting services and to help raise funds for the support the brave fire fighting men and women of Cape Town.  Fire-Aid Noordhoek was put together through a communal effort between The Noordhoek Farm Village, Cafe Roux and The Project Room. In Gauteng, they will give three exclusive performances at The Gauteng Barnyard Theatres! At the Noordhoek Farm Village event early this month, Freshlyground’s Zolani Mahola’s dress, designed by Michelle Ludek, was auctioned off for R20 000 to a local Noordhoek couple, who’s house was tenaciously saved from the flames by firefighters. This sum was matched by a Dutch couple so moved by their Fire-Aid experience, bringing in R40 000 for the lead-singer’s garment. In total R150 000 was raised at Fire-Aid and is distributed between VWS (Volunteer Wildfire Services), Noordhoek Control Centre and the wife of Willem Hendrik ‘Bees’ Marais, the local helicopter pilot who lost his life in the life of duty.

The supporting acts joining Freshlyground on their national tour will at various times include Beatenberg, Jeremy Oliver and Me & Mr Brown.

Freshlyground will perform on the following date:
