LATAM Airlines, the airline with the most extensive network within Latin America, is offering a range of discounted flights from Johannesburg to 115 destinations in the region. Priced from R8 900, travellers can connect to São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (Brazil) directly from O.R. Tambo international.

With the first flight to Johannesburg scheduled for 3 October this year, LATAM Airlines will initially offer three weekly flights through its new international route that will connect the two continents. One of the perks of travel to Latin America is that no visa is required when visiting most of the countries if you are from South Africa.

São Paulo is the springboard

“We believe that Latin America has great appeal for South Africans. It has breathtaking scenic beauty, favourable exchange rates, wonderful taste experiences, and a rich cultural heritage to explore,” said Martin Modarelli, Commercial Director UK, Nordic Countries and Africa for LATAM Airlines.

LATAM’s new connection gives local travellers the opportunity to take advantage of its extensive network, with regular onward connections across Brazil (40) and to Chile (16), Argentina (14), Ecuador (5), Peru (16), Colombia (20) and Paraguay (2) as well as Mexico, Uruguay, Bolivia and Venezuela.

A world of bucket lists

Latin America extends across 46 countries and approximately 21 million km2 that span around 15% of the total land surface of the planet. Its biggest city, São Paulo is the airline’s primary regional hub. Modarelli comments: “Our region holds adventure and allure, and a deep history that will take you back to the roots of civilisations.”

The region holds natural and manmade wonders that include the Amazon, Machu Pichu (Peru), Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) and Easter Island (Chile). It is geographically expansive in its beauty and natural heritage, with it being home to unexplained natural phenomena such as the “Rain of Fish” in Honduras.

Travel itineraries can include an Amazon meander by entering the world’s largest rainforest through the Iron Bridget in Manaus (Brazil), to taking in the majesty of the Foz de Iguazu’s 275 waterfalls (Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina) that stand more than 60 metres tall, to feeling time stand still in the Ice Age in Patagonia (Argentina).

Compelling direct flight promotion

LATAM Airlines Group’s first promotional offer in South Africa can be booked through local travel agents or travel agencies, and includes the following pricing:

  • Johannesburg to Rio de Janeiro from R8,900
  • Johannesburg to Buenos Aires from 9,500
  • Johannesburg to Salvador from R9,500

“Over and above our 115 destinations in Latin America and the upcoming route to Africa, we connect passengers to Europe, United States, the Caribbean and Oceania,” he said, adding that the airline is an alliance partner of oneworld. This network provides members with access to priority check-in, over 950 destinations and more than 600 VIP lounges worldwide.
