Local rapper and poet, TUMI has teamed up with French Trip Hop Trio CHINESE MAN for the album ‘The Journey’ released on Chinese Man Records in late 2015. Featuring KHULI CHANA ‘Pills For Your Ills’ is the first single from the album released to SA radio last month and the great POV music video launches across South African TV this week, and already has amassed over 83 000 views on YouTube alone. ‘Pills For Your Ills’ music video was directed by the VYZ team and CHINESE MAN, and the video concept comes from the same creation process as for the album: street and spontaneous. It is also a reflection on their relationship with images and the omnipresence of new technologies in everyday life. It was inevitable since their first collaboration between Tumi and Chinese Man back in 2012 with Tá bom that something more had to happen. Thus the birth of the album ‘The Journey’. For its production, the three “Chinese” disciples drew from the darkest record bins: Banjo method, 30’s music, flutes from the Andes… and the goal rather was simple: step out from the usual territory used by the sample addicts and get as far away as possible from the hip-hop to then come back with new perspectives. Five of the titles were produced by Chinese Man and one by LeYan and Tomapam. In parallel, six instrumental versions complete the album, including great contributions from Hugo Kant, Le Syndicat Du Chrome and Scratch Bandits Crew. Tumi’s texts, in their turn, oscillate permanently between mockery and bitterness. Behind the humor and punchlines, Tumi shares his vision of the music world and his place in it. In studio, the group decided to foster a sense of urgency so as to preserve a rough aspect and a live energy at the heart of this adventure. The Journey was recorded in six days, in the home of the Chinese Man, in Marseille. For this project the BPM was accelerated, the samples intertwined, and the MCs’ flows went back to basics. Tumi and Chinese Man invited Taiwan MC for a feature and included the new guard of South African MCs, Khuli Chana and Youngsta CPT, on tracks as well!
