You might recognize Donald Nxumalo from winning the popular SABC3 Win A Home Design Competition, this year Nxumalo will be featured as Decorex Johannesburg’s Spotlight Designer.

BLQ interviewed Nxumalo in 2017 and to see him return to such a prestigious stage is evidence of this designers’ talent and hard work. Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Reed Exhibitions, said that selecting the annual Designer Spotlight for the flagship exhibition always takes a lot of consideration and that Nxumalo’s extensive body of work along with his urban style, captivated the panel and will surely dazzle Decorex visitors.

Nxumalo’s design ethos is simple: “My clients must see themselves in what I bring together. I allow the space for them to be themselves, and they allow me to be me.” The combination of taking inspiration from clients and from his own heritage makes Nxumalo a perfect match to this year’s Decorex theme – Design In Africa.  Excited about the continent’s emerging role within the design industry, Nxumalo believes that Africa has long been an exciting birthing place for creativity and he is certainly making his mark on the design map.

Some of the emerging design trends that Nxumalo is currently exploring are asymmetrical geometric patterns, although he says that ‘you date a trend, and marry a classic.’ As part of his collection for Decorex, visitors will be able to see large pieces in solid colours with trendy accent directions coming through in accessories and details.
