Subcultures have sartorial signifiers, and jeans are the short-hand identifiers. The way we wear our jeans speaks to the way we position ourselves. Slim, Loose, Tapered, Straight, and (even) Boot Cut are more than merely about silhouette or comfort; your choice in fit says a lot about what, and who, you identify with. G-Star RAW get it. And they’ve put together an exhibition that explores this form of expression in today’s South Africa. Curated by MJ Turpin and Matthew Dowdle, the exhibition “How we wear ours” at the Kalashnikovv Gallery showcases work from Johannesburg and Cape Town based creative practitioners on their interpretation of jeans culture in South Africa. Featuring work by Anthony Bila, Gabrielle Kannemeyer, Jade Klara, Trevor Stuurman, Smiso Zwane (Okmalumkoolkat) and Paul Ward, the exhibition runs from 1-3 October 2015. #TightOrWide #GStarRAW Opening hours Kalashnikovv Gallery Wednesday: 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm Thursday: 12:00 pm – 9:00 pm Friday: 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm Saturday: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Leave a Reply Cancel ReplyYou must be logged in to post a comment.
